“Korn” – Heavier Than Ever
The eighth studio album of “Korn” is due in late July, and according to the band’s guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer’s
statement is the heaviest record the group has ever recorded.
“It’s very musical”, Munky explaines. “I would compare it to “Untouchables”. It has a lot of highs and lows throughout it,
and it’s very gothic, I think. It kind of took on this whole gothic feel, which we didn’t set out to do. When we were done
with it, we sort of just sat back, and we were all kind of laughing about it, because it has that vibe throughout. I think
our fans are going to be stunned by how heavy it is, as far as an emotional sense.
A lot of these songs are sad. But at the same time, some of the heaviest stuff we’ve ever done, musically, is on this
record. There are moments here and there that are just tough. This one song, called ‘Ever Be,’ just has this epic ending to
it — like, imagine “300” set to song. It’s crazy. Some of the stuff’s very epic like that, and then pulls way back, so the
dynamics on the record are very wide — from one extreme to the next, and all over the map”.
Unarguably, “Korn” have always been a heavy act. But in this case the overall tone of the album is especially is rife with
emotion and has a genuine sadness to it.
The final mix of the album should be ready before this week is over. The LP remains untitled yet, although the band is
toying around the idea to self-title it, as they did with their 1994 debut.
The list of the confirmed tracks:
“Evolution” Described by front man Jonathan Davis Jonathan as “addressing global climate issues. It’s not political Al Gore
shit. I’m just wondering, are my kids going to have a place to live?” “Evolution” will be the first single of the album.
“Starting Over”. A song where Jonathan Davis channels all of his feelings about the battles he’s overcome in the past few
years: alcohol addiction, drug dependency, and a near-fatal blood disease.
“Kiss”. One of Munky’s favorite tracks. It has piano in it, and there’s a very melancholy tone to it,” Shaffer describes
the song.
“My Arm Hurts”. As Munky comments “It’s a hard riff to play, and if you keep playing it for an hour, your arm hurts”.
“Hushaby”
“Ever Be”
“I Will Protect You”
